Professional Ethics: A Search Beyond Codes and Cannons
A Survey of the Legal and Ethical Considerations for the Insurance Producers – 4 Hour CE, Course #19843
This class focuses on relationships and obligations, particularly those relationships between the insurance producer and the carrier, the customer, the body of policyholders, the policy itself, as well as the producer’s place in the commonweal. To set the “baseline” the class will explore producer discipline using the relevant statutes and case law. There will be an in-depth examination of Pendleton vs. McCarty (Ind App 2001).
The class will begin the study of the basic ethical considerations for the Insurance producers, defining in-depth the terms, i.e. ethics, morality, profession, etc. First, the class will focus on the need for the insurance producer to have a sound ethical foundation. The class will examine the various ethical cannons within the insurance profession but will go far beyond these and develop an ethical thought process. The class will examine why some people act unethically as well as common rationalizations for unethical behavior. Unique to the class will be the development of a “preflight checklist” for sound ethical decision-making.
The final section of the class will be a very highly structured practicum, involving a number of situations based on actual occurrences. Each is designed to highlight an important principle, and each requires approximately fifteen minutes of class time.
