The thoughts and prayers of the entire NAHU family are with our friends and colleagues affected by Hurricane Harvey. The storm hit the Texas Gulf Coast late Friday bringing with it widespread destruction and flooding. Many areas have experienced more than three feet of rain, which continues across the area and is not expected to let up for several days. Early estimates put property losses in the tens of billions of dollars. Presently there is no mail being delivered to the majority of the affected area.
In the aftermath of natural disasters such as Harvey, people generally turn to their insurance advisors to help with the aspects of recovery. At the same time, many advisors will be dealing with losses of their own, including flooded homes and businesses, as well as displaced friends, family, and employees.
The coming weeks and months will be difficult for those affected by Harvey. The NAHU UNITE program was created for this purpose, to coordinate in providing interim and short-term financial support and relief efforts to help sustain NAHU members until more permanent funding becomes available, such as insurance proceeds and/or federal funding.
We have already identified several NAHU members that have experienced total personal and business losses and are currently displaced. As Houston continues to receive record amounts of rainfall and flooding, there will likely be more. NAHU and its members are a family, and we encourage everyone to reach out and help their fellow NAHU agents affected by this devastation. These members have not asked for help but could definitely use your help. In addition to your thoughts, the best form of help you can send are gift cards that can be used for fuel, food, hotel and other sundries. Please do not send cash or checks.
